शैतान से सवाल : Asking the Devil

एक लड़का दुकान से डबलरोटी खरीदने जा रहा था. उसी समय वहां से
शहर का मेयर गुज़रा. एक आस्थावान वृद्धा ने लड़के से कहा – "तुम्हें पता है
वह इतना शक्तिशाली क्यों है? क्योंकि वह शैतान के बताये रास्ते पर चल
रहा है".
लड़के को कुछ समझ में नहीं आया.
कुछ समय बाद एक दूसरे शहर की यात्रा के दौरान लड़के ने मक्के का बहुत
बड़ा और खूबसूरत खेत देखा. अपने गंतव्य पर पहुँचने के बाद उसने उस खेत के
मालिक के बारे में पूछा.
एक गांववाले ने उसे बताया – "वह खेत और यहाँ की सारी जमीन एक
ही आदमी की है जिसने शैतान के हांथों अपनी आत्मा का सौदा कर
लिया है."
लड़के को कुछ समझ में नहीं आया.
एक दिन एक खूबसूरत औरत लड़के के करीब से गुज़री. एक पादरी ने भी उसे
देखा और लड़के से कहा – "यह औरत शैतान की गुलाम है".
उस दिन लड़के ने यह ठान लिया कि वह शैतान को खोजकर उससे कुछ
पूछेगा. एक दिन शैतान से उसका आमना-सामना हो ही गया."मैंने सुना है
कि तुम लोगों को शक्तिशाली, अमीर, और खूबसूरत बना सकते हो!" –
लड़के ने पूछा.
"सच कहूँ तो… यह सब झूठ है" – शैतान ने कहा – "तुम मुझे उनकी कही बातें
सुना रहे हो जो दिन-रात मेरा काम बढ़ाने में लगे रहते हैं".

The boy was walking to buy bread when the mayor of the city
crossed the street. 'The reason he is so powerful, is because, he's
made a pact with the devil,' a very devout woman in the street
told the boy. Some time later, when travelling to another town,
the boy saw a beautiful corn field. He asked who the owner was.
'All this land belongs to the same man. I'd say the Devil had a
hand in that.' – answered one of the villagers. At this very
moment, a beautiful woman walked past the boy. A priest also
saw her and said aloud: 'That woman is in the services of
Satan!' From then on, the boy decided to seek the Devil out. One
day he managed to see him face to face. 'They say you can make
people powerful, rich, and beautiful.' 'To be totally honest, this
is not true' replied the Devil. 'You have just been listening to the
views of those who are trying to promote me.'
