Surat is the first city in the country to have a state-of-the- art
real-time CCTV surveillance network. At present, 104 CCTV cameras have
already been installed at 23 locations. Police plan to install 5,000
cameras across the city in phases. Chief minister Narendra Modi had
launched the project in January. The project was conceptualized by city
police commissioner Rakesh Asthana. Kamlesh Yagnik, president Southern
Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGsaid, "We have to make our
systems functional and modern to maintain proper law and order and this
step in the right direction for the city that is likely to become a
mega city in few years' time."
The first phase was developed at cost of Rs 12 crore and the funds were
raised through donation by leading business groups in the city. Apart
from the CCTV cameras, the project has one of the largest video walls
in the country of 280 sq ft installed at the police control room. Work
for second phase has already been initiated and it is aimed to install
1000 CCTV cameras in second phase in a year's time.
The project started in early 2012 and the first phase was completed in
a record seven months. At the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce
and Industries (FICCI) conference held at Delhi on urban security
aspects, Surat police was the only urban body that gave a presentation
on operational CCTV surveillance project.
